Your prelim exam for Introduction to Computing almost always draws from the first three units of this subject:

| 3 | Unit II — Number systems and conversions | Do every conversion direction by hand: binary/octal/decimal/hex, both ways, including one fractional conversion. |
| 4 | Unit II — Arithmetic and complements | Binary, octal, and hex addition with carries; subtraction by direct method, 1's complement, and 2's complement. Drill the carry rules until automatic. |
| 5 | Unit II — Data representation | BCD, unpacked and packed decimal, sign-magnitude, the IEEE single-precision layout (1-8-23, bias 127), ASCII anchors, even and odd parity. |
