One of Rizal's famous essays is "Sobre la Indolencia de los Filipinos" (The Indolence of the Filipinos), published in 1890. In it, Rizal responds to critics who said Filipinos were lazy and unwilling to work. Rizal argues the opposite: Filipinos' so-called laziness was a consequence of colonial rule. He points out reasons such as:
In short, Rizal explained that the environment created by Spain made people appear "indolent." He urged Filipinos to take pride in their identity and to work toward improving their situation, and he urged Spaniards to remove obstacles and help Filipinos develop. This essay showed Rizal's analytical side: he took a negative label and turned it into a critique of the colonial system.
